Have you ever wondered what the difference is between Saline Tattoo Removal and Laser Tattoo Removal?

How does Saline Tattoo Removal Work?

Saline Tattoo Removal uses the process of osmosis to remove the tattoo. Saline is pushed and applied into the tattooed area using a tattoo machine and tattoo needle. The pigment is pulled up towards the surface of the skin. This is because if there are two liquids next to each other, if the membrane separating them is porous (in this case the skin), the liquid with a lower salt content is drawn to the liquid with the higher salt content, drawing the pigment with it.

Will Saline Removal work on my tattoo?

Saline tattoo removal is a very effective treatment for cosmetic tattoos and small body tattoos no bigger than a deck of cards. If the tattoo is bigger than this, it may take too long to lighten or remove and laser removal is in this instance recommended. Saline Removal is great for small body tattoos, microblading, migrated eyeliner, scalp micropigmentation (SMP), eyeliner tattoo and migrated eyeliner.

Selective Tattoo Removal

Saline Tattoo Removal is a precise tattoo removal technique. It is so precise it can remove a wing from an eyeliner tattoo whilst keeping the rest of eyeliner intact. Or part of an eyebrow tattoo without removing the whole brow tattoo. For example, it can remove a hair stroke from feathering or microblading, a tail that is too long or the top of a brow that arches too high. It is also a great option if you wish to remove someone’s name from a tattoo without removing the whole tattoo.

Why choose Saline instead of Laser?

Laser Tattoo Removal uses a laser to break down the pigment into very small particles which are absorbed into the lymphatic system and then expelled by the body. Some people do not like the idea of the pigment being absorbed by the lymphatic system and chose Saline Removal for this reason. They may have health issues and may see this removal treatment a risk to have the pigment enter into the blood stream.

In addition, Laser Tattoo Removal can cause scar tissue which means you may not be able to retattoo over the area that has been treated. In contrast, you are usually able to tattoo over an area that has had Saline Tattoo Removal. This makes saline the best option, for instance, if you would like to remove your existing microblading and get your brows tattooed again. This is very common when the shape or pigment colour or saturation needs fixing and can’t be corrected with a brow refresh alone.

Another restraint with Laser Removal is that, especially with older laser removal machines, it will target only specific colours to break down. So, if you chose Laser Removal make sure the laser being used targets all colours. No laser to date is able to remove white (titanium dioxide) because it can’t detect it. Titanium dioxide is the white pigment often used to lighten colours. Saline Removal does not care what colour it is removing. It will remove all colours including titanium dioxide.

When should I choose Laser Tattoo Removal?

Usually Laser Tattoo Removal is recommended if the tattoo you want removed is very large and you don’t want to retattoo the area because the laser can cover a large area very quickly.

How many treatments do you need to remove a tattoo using Saline?

Usually you need anywhere from 1 to 5 treatments to remove a tattoo using saline. The number one thing is to be patient. You will get good results with removal and whether it’s with a laser or saline, it is a process. Sometimes we see great results after 1 session but we won’t know until we do it how your skin or the pigment will respond.

We do know that carbon tends to lift faster than titanium dioxide because the particle size of the pigment is very small. So surprisingly dark blackish tattoos provide can provide fast results. Rarely, the tattoo can appear darker after a removal session but this is because the pigment has been lifted closer to the surface of the skin and, although it doesn’t appear to be, is a good result. Usually after the following session in these cases you can see very good results. You can find our booking information and prices for Saline Removal here.

Does Saline Removal hurt?

Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area being treated. Sometimes some stinging can be felt from the saline applied to the area in the last part of the treatment. Holding an electric handheld fan over the area, which we can give you to use during the appointment, will alleviate this feeling greatly.

Emergency Tattoo Removal

If your tattoo is less than 48 hours old saline tattoo removal can be used with great results. Contact us immediately if you can’t find a spot in the online booking system and we will find a time slot for you so we can treat it in time.

Let’s talk about hyperpigmentation…

Sometimes there is hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation under the existing tattoo that is being removed. We don’t know what is under the tattoo until it is removed because the tattoo is concealing the hyperpigmentation. Sometimes it is concealing scar tissue caused by the previous tattoo. Occasionally, hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation is caused by the removal process. When this happens it is temporary and often resolves itself over time.

What it is an eyeliner tattoo?

An eyeliner tattoo is a cosmetic tattoo which can last for many years. Black pigment made from iron oxides is usually used although occasionally dark brown or a colour is used, particularly for a shading effect. Sometimes it can fade within a couple of years and at that point may need a refresh and sometimes it can last for many, many years. Often an eyeliner tattoo tends to last longer than an eyebrow tattoo. Because we aren’t able to determine how long it will last we often call cosmetic tattooing permanent make up or PMU.

An eyeliner tattoo can be divided into 3 core designs. A wedge shape, wing shape or an eyelash enhancement. It is designed for an individual’s face. The design is usually determined by the client’s eye shape, eyelids and face shape, as well as their aesthetic or taste.

A lash enhancement is a baby eyeliner inside the lash line.

A Lash Enhancement is a baby eyeliner tattooed inside the lash line.

What are the benefits of an eyeliner tattoo?

  • If you can’t see very well and aren’t able to draw on eyeliner
  • If your eyeliner tends to smudge off after a couple of hours
  • If you live an active lifestyle and can’t wear eyeliner but want to
  • If you find it difficult to draw eyeliner on, for instance you can’t seem to be able to draw on eyeliner with wings and make them look even
  • If you have pale eyes and lashes and want more definition
  • If you are time poor and want to be able to get up and go without the fuss and maintenance of applying topical makeup

Is an eyeliner tattoo safe?

We just don’t know. We do know humans have been tattooing themselves for thousands of years without any unequivocal evidence they are harmful. That said, all treatments, including permanent makeup, come with risks. Tattooing is an invasive treatment and infection is possible if the area is not kept free from pathogens during the procedure or during the healing period.

Go to a reputable cosmetic tattooist that understands and practices hygiene and infection control. After you get your eyeliner tattoo, proper aftercare is tantamount to protect from infection. Keep the tattooed area clean, no touching and avoid activities that may expose the healing area to pathogens, such as gardening, which may kick up a lot of microbes into the air. Avoid wearing contact lenses while it’s healing. Follow the aftercare instructions provided.

What can I expect at my appointment?

We will check you are a suitable candidate and have a chat about what your expectations are. The area is prepped with  a pre-cleanse and numbing cream is applied. After the design is drawn, mapped and measured and we check you are 100% happy, we only then move onto the tattooing.

Can I get an eyeliner tattoo?

You can’t get a cosmetic tattoo if you are breastfeeding, pregnant or had injectables in treatment area in the last 2 weeks. If you are using a lash serum you need to cease for a minimum of 4 weeks before getting your eyeliner tattoo and if you are wearing lash extensions they need to be removed a week beforehand. If your eyelids are highly vascular this may also mean you are not a good candidate. Some medications and health issues may also make permanent makeup unsuitable for you. Let your cosmetic tattooist know and always check with your medical practitioner if you are unsure. We are not able to provide medical advice.

Is it painful?

We use a topical anaesthetic to numb the area. This will reduce or remove all sensation depending on your level of sensitivity.

What is the downtime of an eyeliner tattoo?

You may experience immediate swelling from getting an eyeliner tattoo. If your eyes swell after a good cry this could indicate you may swell from the treatment. If you are getting a large eyeliner and the area is worked more, this could also contribute to swelling. Many clients experience minimal swelling. Swelling is usually gone by the next day. Occasionally bruising may occur.

The eyeliner tattoo will “graze” and flake as it heals. It may feel a little itchy, this is the skin healing. Do not be tempted to pick or brush away the flaking. This could pull out the pigment, making the tattoo look patchy and uneven.

A follow up, or perfection visit, is required 4 to 6 week after the initial appointment. This is to go over the tattoo if it has lightened too much, and to perfect any unevenness that may have occurred from the swelling during the initial procedure.

Concerned about COVID-19 but need to get your lashes and brows done? Our stylists always wear masks, sanitise their hands and disinfect tweezers between treatments and have been doing so before this became an issue. We have our salons commercially cleaned and we have always passed our health inspection reports with flying colours.

We also assist you in social distancing with properly partitioned treatment rooms to minimise contact with other clients and by reducing the amount of clients waiting in reception to one person at a time when possible by running on time, and if you arrive early and a room is available, offering a treatment room to wait in.

Everything you wanted to know about Lash Lifts

At Always Elegant we have done thousands and thousands of Lash Lifts. In fact, we were one of the very first salons in Sydney to introduce them as treatment way back in 2013. We know our Lifts.

What is a Lash Lift?

A Lash Lift, also known as an LVL, is a perm. But unlike a traditional lash perm, instead of curling the lashes back onto a rod, the lashes are set on a shield which sets the lashes straight and up.

Why is this better? With a traditional lash lift, lashes are curled back and can even appear shorter than before you got the perm. A Lash Lift perms the lashes up so you see more of the lashes. Lashes appear longer and fuller as a result than if they are sitting straight ahead, unpermed.

It’s a great low maintenance treatment because you get it done every 6 to 8 weeks (add a lash tint during your appointment for extra impact) and can forget about it. If you find eyelash extensions too high maintenance or don’t have the time for an appointment every 3 weeks for lash extension infills, a Lash Lift may be the perfect beauty solution for you.

The most crucial elements of a Lash Lift is

  • Position of the lashes on the shield
  • Processing time
  • Length and condition of the natural eyelashes
  • Aftercare
Lash Lift straight after treatment

A Lash Lift lifts lashes up making them appear longer

The technical stuff

A Lash Lift is a perm. The lashes once in position have the lash lift perming solution is applied. Once the hair bonds have been broken down by the perming solution, a setting solution is applied so the lashes are set into the shape they are positioned in on the shields.

When your Lash Lift is too lifted or not lifted enough

From the many years of experience in doing Lash Lifts at Always Elegant we have developed methods to determine if the processing time needs to be adjusted. So our success rate with Lash Lifts even with difficult lashes is exceptional.

Nevertheless, rarely, if you are new to the salon, the only way we can find out the right processing time for your lashes is by doing the Lash Lift and using the timing and the results of this first Lash Lift as a guide for you future Lash Lifts.

Lash Lift on shorter lashes

Can I have a Lash Lift if I have short lashes?

Lash Lifts are great treatment for mid to long eyelashes. If you have short lashes and still wish to go ahead and try a Lash Lift you will need to accept the Lash Lift will not have the same results as someone with medium to long eyelashes. That said, we have achieved some great results with shorter lashes.

Aftercare

For the best results for your Lash Lift, do not get your Lash Lift wet or get steam on your lashes for the first 24 hours. This will cause the Lash Lift to drop. Do not sleep on your lashes (stomach sleepers I am talking to you!) in the first 24 hours because this will cause the Lift to crinkle into the shape you have crushed your lashes into the pillow to.

Do not wear mascara or eye makeup for the for the first 24 hours. It could dry out your lashes causing them to frizz or over process or it could make the lift drop. After following these instructions for the first 24 hours you are good to go and can get them wet and wear eye makeup.

We recommend using a Lash Lift formulated mascara like Elleebana’s Elleevate Lash Lift Mascara.

Follow the steps in your Aftercare Pack and brush your lashes in the morning and evening and enjoy the ease and beauty of your Lash Lift.

With Summer well and truly here, it’s time to get our skin out and glow on for those long lazy lunches and vibrant summer nights. But we also encourage you to get your glow IN as well as OUT. Here’s how and why…

During the last few decades we’ve been taught to stay out of the sun for fear of causing sun damage to our skin, but did you know that sitting in natural morning sunlight for 5-20 minutes a day is equivalent to a daily dose of Vitamin D?

The sun enhances our immune system, boosts our energy and helps us get a great night’s sleep. When the sun is shining it’s also Mother Nature’s call for us to get some of that feel good chemical serotonin into our body. Sunlight on the inside makes us happy, literally.

But some of us still use the sun to get a suntan; we bake at high noon, covered in oils hoping to get that beautiful natural glow. Of course we end up doing serious damage to our skin. This is why our Goddess of Beauty created… The Spray Tan.

At Elegant Lashes we use Black Magic Tan. It’s an Australian made brand using natural and organic ingredients that will give you a rich, deep tan with no smell, no parabens and is cruelty free. With green and violet-based solutions, you will NEVER go orange. Black Magic Tan uses aloe vera along with additional antioxidants leaving your skin feeling nourished and hydrated.

You will walk out of the salon looking and feeling like you’ve been holidaying in the South of France, floating on a sun lounge while being served cocktails by beautiful cabana boys (or girls) wearing nothing but a smile, and some cloth.

Combining a healthy amount of sunshine, along with a beautiful Black Magic Tan gets your glow inside and out, and will make you the talk of the town!

Have a listen to one of our favourite world experts on Womens Health, Dr Christianne Northrup telling us about the benefits of sunlight.

Be Fabulous Forever.

With love from The Elegant Lashes Team xo

Sick of the smudges?

If you are using eye makeup every day or prefer a low fuss beauty regime, an eyeliner tattoo may be for you.

Cosmetic tattooing is a popular beauty secret amongst those in fashion and beauty. A simple search on Instagram for #cosmetictattooing or #eyelinertattoo and it’s quick to see it’s popularity.

Eyeliner tattoo is waterproof, smudge free and low fuss. You can get eyeliner tattoo within the lash line [see image above] for beautiful, natural definition or above the lash line, with or without wings. Best of all the eyeliner will be even. No more wonky wings! You can also get the eyeliner tattoo along the lower eyelid or without.

A qualified and experienced cosmetic tattooist will provide you with a thorough consultation to discuss your suitability and the design of the eyeliner. The eyeliner shape will be drawn on with make up so you can see what the finished result will look like.

Eyeliner is mostly done with a black pigment, which is specially formulated for cosmetic tattooing and will fade after a few years. No body tattooing inks or equipment should ever be used for cosmetic tattooing.

Eyeliner tattoo is semi permanent and will last 2 to 4 years. With numbing cream the treatment is not painful. Most clients say they feel a tickling sensation at the start of the procedure.

An eyeliner tattoo will cost approximately $350.
