Treatment Profile; Henna Brows

Henna Brows is the latest in brow beauty treatments. It is similar to a brow tint but it lasts for much longer and, unlike brow tint, it is specifically designed to stain the skin, as well as the brow hairs.

Henna Brows can stain the skin for up to approximately 2 weeks and the brow hairs for up to approximately 6 weeks. This is a huge difference to a brow tint which, although is not designed to do so, may stain the skin for 24 hours if you’re fortunate.

Henna Brows is a fantastic ‘set and forget’ beauty treatment and is perfect for active and busy lifestyles, saving time in the mornings. Henna Brows creates density and fullness to the brows and can correct an uneven brow shape even when there is no or little brow hair.

The darker henna colours tend to last longer than the lighter colours so this is a treatment we recommended for medium to dark brown to black brows. The blonde henna colours will also produce great results but will appear to fade faster. However, for many clients this is not a concern.

Henna Brows can be done in conjunction with waxing, threading or a brow lamination.

Henna Brows is a great treatment to get if you are considering a brow tattoo and want to see how it will look before committing to permanent makeup.

So what happens in a henna brow appointment?

If you are getting the brows shaped too, they are waxed, threaded or tweezed into the shape discussed and agreed on at the beginning of the booking during the consultation process.

The skin has to be very clean and lightly exfoliated to achieve an optimum henna skin stain. Using a special henna preparation product, the brows and area around the brows are lightly scrubbed and cleansed.

After this, a white wax pencil is used to map and draw the brow design on the face. You will get to check the design and any changes can be made at this point. Then the henna paste will be painted on the inside the white wax outline.

The henna will process for approximately 20 to 30 mins. Your stylist will check on your brows during this process and may remove the henna off the beginning of the brows to create an ombre effect, depending on the desired outcome.

After which, the henna is removed and you are good to go!

Henna Brow Aftercare

  • Do not exfoliate the area
  • Do not use cleansers on the brows
  • Splash with water to clean and pat dry
  • Henna Brows works best on normal to dry skin. If you have oily skin the skin stain may not last as long however the brow tint will not be affected.

Winter is slowly approaching Sydney and out have come my fluffy thick socks from the back of my sock draw. A friend of mine jokingly calls hers her “mood killers”. I don’t know if I agree, I think they can look pretty cute.

It’s a great time of year to reflect as social events become less manic and we can focus on a little self care, whatever that may entail for you. For me, it’s taking time to read fiction and of course spend time on my beauty treatments.

It’s also an ideal moment to set up a schedule for self care and block out regular times for hair, beauty and exercise in your calendar and minimise the personal admin that swamps our busy lives. We offer standing appointments at Elegant Lashes so ask us about it at your next booking if this is something you are interested in.

Beauty wise, it’s a fantastic time of year to get your cosmetic tattoo refresh. There is less chance of sun exposure when healing and it’s easier to hide out at home during the downtime if this is something you prefer to do during the first few days.

Eyeliner Tattoo has become quite popular and we are seeing a rise in bookings for this treatment. Like with our Feather Brows Tattoo treatment we provide a complementary, no pressure consultation for this too.

Just a reminder, many of our staff can do threading for brows and face. Threading is a great choice if you have sensitive skin, are using Retin A or AHA’s or are on Roaccutane. Compared to waxing, threading can pick up the smallest of hairs. Interesting fact, most of our male clients prefer threading to waxing and we can do neck hair for males too on request. Much less irritation than shaving.

With love,

Merryn and the Always Elegant team xo

After taking some time off after giving birth (it never sounds quite right saying “time off” as looking after newborns is round the clock hard work!), Wendy is returning to Elegant Lashes.

Feather Brows

Feather Brows

Hair strokes can be created by a microblade tool or a digital machine. So what is the difference? Is one better than the other for feather brow tattooing?

Both microblading and the digital machine with a skilled practitioner will produce crisp lines and both can produce great results however the digital machine has many advantages over the microblade.

We’ve been specialising in feather brows for 5 years, in fact, one of the first salons in Sydney to do so. We have performed thousands of feather brow tattoos and continually update our training. From our experience and knowledge the digital machine is better and this is why:

The depth into the skin in which the pigment is placed is accurately measured by the action of the machine, which you just can’t do by hand with a microblade tool, and this creates a line that is consistent in depth and colour until it tapers off to the tip of the hair stroke.

Feather Brows with Digital Machine

Feather Brows with Digital Machine

The digital machine punctures the hair stokes into the skin whereas a microblade scratches a hairline across the skin. Cosmetic tattooing is a semi permanent treatment and most clients get a refresh once a year. If you get microblading done, multiple treatments of scratching the same area could lead to scarring. This is avoided with a digital machine application.

Microblading doesn’t often work with oily the skin. The colour doesn’t hold as well and in some cases may not take at all. So we always recommend a digital machine for feather brows to avoid this from happening.

Microblade Tool

Microblade Tool

Microblading often does not last as long as cosmetic tattooing with a digital machine and this is attributed to the shallowness of the application in comparison and the inconsistency in depth from applying the hair strokes manually.

So these are the advantages of a digital machine; consistent, even hair strokes, a colour that will hold longer even with oily skin, and avoiding the risk of scarring.

How to look after your cosmetic tattoo

Immediately after a cosmetic tattooing procedure the area treated will look about 50% darker than the final results. This is temporary, the colour will lighten and soften over 3 to 14 days. It is normal for the area to feel slightly tender or dry. Here are some instructions and tips to follow to look after your cosmetic tattoo.

Home care instructions

Purchase a small tube of Bepanthen Cream. This is a gentle antiseptic cream which assists in the skin’s natural healing process. It will prevent infections and scabbing and will hydrate and soothe the tattooed area. Apply every few hours for the first week, then twice a day for the second week, and always after showering (do not use soap on the treated area).

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area for the first 2 weeks. Exposure to the sun over time can cause fading and may cause the colour to change. If you are going out into the sun apply sunscreen to protect the area. You can cover the area with vaseline when swimming in chlorine water to prevent bleaching.
  • No make-up is to be applied on the treated area at least 48 hours. This can lead to infection and the colour to change. If you do use it, use brand new make-up to minimise infection. This is especially important with mascara.
  • No soap or cleansers on the treated area for one day.
  • Don’t scrub the treated area, crusting will fall off naturally please don’t force it.
  • Avoid using teeth whitening tooth paste if you have had a lip tattoo. Chemicals of any kind can interfere with healing and the colour.
  • Skin topicals that contain acids or retinol may lighten the colour prematurely with continuous use.
  • Don’t sit in a heated spa, sauna or steam room 2 weeks. Steam will open pores and may make the colour bleed out.
  • Do not wax, pluck or bleach the hair for at least 3 weeks after the treatment. If you are having laser hair removal or resurfacing, please inform the cosmetic tattooist prior to your procedure.
  • Do not use prescription Retin-A or Roaccutane for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment and 4 weeks after the treatment
  • No fillers or anti-wrinkle injections such as Restylane or Botox on or near the treated areas 2 weeks before or after treatment

Eyebrow Care

Immediately after and for next 24 hours continue to wipe the eyebrows. They will weep a clear fluid which is normal and part of the healing process. Wipe them gently to remove the fluid otherwise a crusting or scab will build up which is not what we want. As the eyebrow skin heals, the area can often form a slight crusting which will be flaking off naturally. Do not scrub off the flaking. After 5-6 days the brow tattooing will dramatically soften and lighten approximately 50%.

Apply Bepanthen Cream a minimum of three times a day for the first week. Then twice a day for the following two weeks until the skin healed and smooth. For maximum results cream must be applied every 2-3 hours for the first day and about every 4 hours for the next 5 days.

Eyeliner Care

Expect the eye to be slightly tender 1-3 days. Swelling is minimal and with most clients it will subside within 24 hours. It is not necessary to apply any after care cream. If needed, apply a small amount of Bepanthen, less is better. Cold pads can be applied to minimise swelling. Do not use eye liner and mascara.

Lip Care

This area will take the longest to heal. The colour will be much brighter than the final colour for 7-8 days. It will then fade to no colour and re-appears after 3-6 weeks. Bepanthen Cream must be applied constantly as your lips will be very dry. Keep them moist with the Bepanthen cream and if you suffer cold sore use cold sore cream like Zovirax with the Bepanthen cream.

Depending on your needs hair stroke eyebrow tattooing can create fullness, correct an arch or fill out over thinned brows. Each individual’s face and requirements are different and so each design is unique too.

A brow tattoo will last 2 to 4 years depending on the skin, colour of the pigment and aftercare. It’s important you go to a cosmetic tattooist specialist. The inks, machine and technique used are not the same as body tattooing. Cosmetic pigments will not fade blue like body inks can and the depth of the pigment into the skin is not as deep.

Once you get the initial brow tattooing done, follow up appointments for a Refresh, which is recommend every year or so, are significantly cheaper.

And the result? Beautiful brows without the daily maintenance.

The details:

  • Hair stroke brow tattooing is also known as brow feathering.
  • We offer free consultations at our Sydney salons in Bondi Junction and Parramatta with no obligation to book afterwards. During the consultation our cosmetic tattooist will explain the technique and answer any questions you have. She will draw the brow design on with make up so you can see what it will look like if you choose to go ahead and book.
  • Please be advised you cannot get cosmetic tattooing if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You must also wait 2 weeks either side of your appointment if you are planning to have injectables around the eye area like Botox or Restalyne and we recommend getting your cosmetic tattoo

All face shapes can use the following tips for the perfect brows whether you have a heart, square, round, long, or diamond shaped face.

  • Begin the brow at the bridge of the nose.
  • Have the arch approximately two-thirds along the brow. Round faces – more arch, long faces – less arch.
  • Avoid shortening eyebrows; length is better. Imagine a line from the edge of your nose extending along past the corner of your eye. Your brows should reach this line. You can extend the end of the brows past this if you like, however keep it above the beginning of the brow otherwise it could make the eyes appear droopy.
  • Go to a professional. Avoid over grooming, permanent brow loss from over-plucking, uneven brows or the wrong shape for your face by going to a lash and brow specialist. Rainbow brows and commas are not flattering! A brow technician will be able to enhance your natural beauty by creating the right shape and style for you.
  • Eyebrow trends for 2015 and 2016 are about fullness, length and soft, natural-looking lines.

Need help?

  • Going grey? Getting your eyebrows tinted professionally will shave years off your appearance. This is one of the easiest, quickest and least expensive ways to appear more youthful. Blondes, this includes you too. We have a range of cool and warm tints and shades to suit all tones. Eyebrows grow out faster than lashes and need to be tinted every 2 weeks.
  • Need fullness?
    • Get a professional eyebrow tint.
    • For a more permanent solution consider hair stroke eyebrow tattooing (see image below). It will last 2 – 4 years depending on the depth of the colour. We provide free cosmetic tattooing consultations at our salons and you are under no obligation to book afterwards.
    • Use a lash and brow growth serum. Used twice a day results can be seen in as little as 3 weeks.
  • Have a scar gap, asymmetry or permanent brow loss from over-grooming? You could consider corrective cosmetic brow tattooing. Eyebrows are created by fine hair strokes and the tattoo is undetectable.
